Requirements to Apply

This application is for a scholarship for a graduating high school senior for undergraduate studies at an accredited college, university, or post-secondary technical school. The applicant must be either a resident of Lancaster County, a graduate of Lancaster High School, or a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock. The scholarship will be granted without consideration of financial need and is renewable for a maximum of eight semesters or until graduation in an undergraduate program, whichever comes first.

 

The scholarship is to be called The Mary Winston McCullough Scholarship and be so designated in all applications, award letters, publicity, and correspondence. Responsibility for awarding and administering the scholarship rests with the Scholarship Committee of Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock, Virginia.

 

The scholarship is awarded to a Graduating High School Senior and is renewable for up to three (3) successive years, for a total of four (4) years. The recipient must be either a Resident of Lancaster County, a Member of Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock, or a Graduate of Lancaster High School. A new scholarship will be awarded yearly, provided funds are available and a suitable candidate is chosen.

 

The students who will be considered for this scholarship must submit a Grace Church McCullough Scholarship application and will be interviewed in person by members of the Grace Episcopal Church McCullough Scholarship Sub-Committee. The application forms are available at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock, or through your high school guidance counselors.

 

A student is eligible for scholarship assistance for a maximum of eight (8) semesters or until graduation in an undergraduate program, whichever comes first. Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students.

 

No specific GPA (grade point average) will be required. The applicant must demonstrate evidence of academic responsibility and/or special gifts or talents. An essay of 250 to 500 words will be required. A representation of the student’s work may be included with the application, if the applicant desires.

 

Involvement in activities outside of class work will be considered in choosing the recipient.

 

The scholarship will be “granted without consideration of financial need”, as stipulated in the will of Alan McCullough, Jr.

 

The scholarship may be used for undergraduate study at any accredited college or university or accredited post-secondary institution. It may be used in or out of Virginia and may be used at a public or private institution.

 

In order to renew the scholarship, the recipient must demonstrate appropriate progress toward her/his degree by submitting a current transcript and letter of intent.

 

Applications for the McCullough Scholarship MUST be received at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock, by March 1st, 2025The completed application may be hand delivered or mailed, but it MUST be received in the business office of Grace Church by the end of the business day, 4:00 pm, on March 1st, 2025. Personal interviews with the committee will be held at the church offices between March 1st and April 1st.

 

The McCullough Scholarship(s) will be awarded in April, 2025, contingent on satisfactory second semester grades.

 

The award letter will include: “It is the intention of the Grace Episcopal Church McCullough Scholarship Committee to continue to support you in receiving an undergraduate degree, subject to satisfactory progress and available funds.” It will be the responsibility of the student to keep the committee informed of grade-point averages, throughout the four (4) years of undergraduate study.

 

The application form for the McCullough Scholarship will be reviewed annually and revised as needed.

 

 

 

Application Deadline

In order for the Mary Winston McCullough Scholarship Committee to consider your application, you must submit your online application and return all required materials listed below by March 1st. The following additional documents must accompany your online application submission and be mailed or hand-delivered to the Scholarship Committee:

  1. High School Transcript: A full transcript of your high school record including first semester senior year.  Second semester senior year grades must be forwarded to the committee at the end of the school year before funds can be forwarded to the post-secondary school.

  2. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of reference from teachers, employers, or other non-family members who know you.

  3. Personal Essay: A personal essay of 250-500 words answering the following prompt:
    The Mary Winston McCullough Scholarship was created by the bequest of the late Alan McCullough, Jr.  Grades or participation in organized activities will not be the sole measures of merit for this scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to the student who demonstrates a passionate interest in some field, possibly one quite out of the ordinary. How do you meet this description?  How will further education help you to pursue your interests and passions and to achieve your goals?

  4. Optional Additional Materials:  You may submit a performance tape or CD, slides (35 mm only) of art work, photography, etc.  If you choose to do so, please be sure to label the material with your name and address and include a self-addressed mailing folder so that the material can be returned to you.

Finalists for the McCullough Scholarship must meet with the Grace Church Scholarship Committee for a personal interview to be scheduled by the committee between March 1st and April 1st. The McCullough Scholarship will be awarded by May 1 contingent on satisfactory final grades being forwarded to the committee at the end of the school year.

Scholarship payments will be sent to the institution of your choice. Please provide the address of the finance office of the college, university or technical school you will be attending.
